Jorge Sampaoli new coach Argentina

Sampaoli was assigned as the new coach of the Argentina National Team for the World Cup 2018 Russia. He is succeeding Edgardo Bauza, who didn’t manage to get the right results for his team. Sampaoli leaves his role as coach of Spanish club Sevilla for this new challenge. He coached Sevilla only for one season.

The Argentinian FA confirmed the appointment of Sampaoli on Thursday. Former coach of La Albiceleste (Argentina), was fired earlier this year.

Sampaoli had shared his dream to become coach of his original country last year in an interview with FIFA.com. He said: “If you are called to lead the national team, you cannot say no.” And he obviously didn’t.

The former Coach of Sevilla returns back to his home country, after leading Spanish club Sevilla to the round of 16 of this years Champions League. Before that, he had coached the national team of Chile, where his leading performance led the team to the last 16 teams in the FIFA World Cup 2014 Brazil, and after that led La Roja (Chile) to the victory of the Copa America in 2015.

His task now is to make sure Argentina will Qualify for the World Cup this year. Argentina is sitting in 5th place in the CONMEBOL Qualification for the World Cup 2018, as seen in the table below. To automatically qualify, Sampaoli has to take the 4th spot in the poul. The next match of Argentina is against Uruguay on the 31st of August.

The debut of the new coach will be played on the 9th of June, when Argentina will face arch-rivals Brazil in a friendly match.
